Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of temporal clear corneal phacoemulsification on intraocular pressure (IOP) in eyes that had prior trabeculectomy.
  • To compare IOP control after combined trabeculectomy and phacoemulsification versus trabeculectomy alone.

  • Retrospective case-control study.
  • Compared 40 patients undergoing temporal clear corneal phacoemulsification after trabeculectomy (TRAB-PHACO) with 40 patients who had trabeculectomy alone (TRAB).

    Conclusions:

    • Temporal clear corneal phacoemulsification is safe in eyes with filtering blebs post-trabeculectomy.
    • Cataract surgery using this technique does not adversely affect long-term intraocular pressure control.
    • This suggests a favorable safety profile for combined glaucoma and cataract surgery.
