Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Epidermolytic acanthomas are rare, benign skin neoplasms.
  • Disseminated variants are uncommon and typically present on sun-exposed areas.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old male presented with multiple verrucous papules on his back post-sunburn.
  • Clinical presentation mimicked Darier's disease, seborrheic keratoses, or verrucae planae.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed disseminated epidermolytic acanthomas.
  • Electron microscopy showed premature and altered keratinocyte cornification.

Implications:

  • Distinguishing acquired epidermolytic acanthomas from congenital ichthyoses with similar histopathology is crucial.
  • Early identification prevents misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment for benign lesions.
