Summary

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may cause mixed cryoglobulinemia. This study found HCV genotypes 1 and 2 more common in patients with symptomatic cryoglobulinemia, recommending HCV genotyping for diagnosis.

Background:

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is increasingly linked to mixed cryoglobulinemia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between hepatitis C virus genotypes and the development of symptomatic mixed cryoglobulinemia.
  • To determine if HCV genotyping can aid in identifying patients at risk for cryoglobulinemia.

Main Methods:

  • HCV genotyping was performed on 45 infected patients using direct sequencing of 5' non-coding region PCR products.
  • Patient samples were analyzed for the presence and type of HCV infection.

Main Results:

  • HCV genotypes 1 and 2 were significantly more prevalent in patients presenting with symptomatic mixed cryoglobulinemia.
