Summary

Thyroxine sulfate (T4S) levels increased in urine but not serum during suppressive thyroxine (T4) therapy. This suggests T4 sulfation plays a role in regulating thyroid hormone metabolism in individuals with elevated T4.

  • Thyroxine sulfate (T4S) has been detected in fetal samples, but its role in adults with high thyroxine (T4) states is unclear.
  • Understanding T4S changes is crucial for managing thyroid hormone regulation, particularly during T4 therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the changes in serum and urinary T4S levels in women undergoing suppressive T4 therapy.
  • To explore the relationship between T4S and overall thyroid hormone status in a T4-treated population.

Main Methods:

  • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure serum and urinary T4S concentrations.
  • 16 premenopausal women with benign nodular goiter received T4 therapy for three months.
  • Serum T4, free T4, and other thyroid hormones were also monitored.

Main Results:

  • Serum T4 levels significantly increased post-treatment, while serum T4S remained low and largely unchanged.
  • Urinary T4S levels, corrected for creatinine, significantly increased after T4 administration.
