Repeated rapid-rate transcranial magnetic stimulation (rrTMS) showed no adverse effects in healthy subjects. This safe technique using specific parameters is valuable for studying cognitive, sensory, and motor functions.

Background:

  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique.
  • Rapid-rate TMS (rrTMS) offers potential for prolonged cortical disruption.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and functional effects of repeated short trains of rrTMS over the left motor cortex.
  • To evaluate neurological, cognitive, and motor functions following rrTMS application.

Main Methods:

  • Six healthy subjects received two blocks of rrTMS (50 trains of 4 stimuli at 20 Hz, 5-10% above motor threshold).
  • EEG, neurological, cognitive, and motor functions were assessed pre- and post-stimulation.
  • EMG recorded motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from arm muscles.
