Nocturnal light exposure during sleep may shorten long menstrual cycles. Light masks offer a potential alternative to bedside lamps for this light therapy.

Background:

  • Previous studies indicated nocturnal light exposure can shorten menstrual cycles exceeding 33 days.
  • This research investigates the efficacy of light therapy confined to the sleep period.

Observation:

  • Two light intensities (235-250 lux and <1 lux) and delivery methods (lighted mask, bedside lamp) were assessed.
  • Higher light intensity (235-250 lux) significantly shortened cycle lengths compared to baseline.

Findings:

  • While 235-250 lux reduced cycle length, the difference was not significant compared to <1 lux.
  • Increased sleep disturbance was reported at higher light levels, though overall sleep quality remained comparable.

Implications:

  • Light therapy confined to the sleep period may be effective for regulating menstrual cycles.
