Background:

  • Poliomyelitis survivors often face long-term physical challenges.
  • Societal participation and employment of individuals with post-polio syndrome remain areas of interest.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the educational attainment and employment status of patients with a history of poliomyelitis.
  • To investigate the correlation between physical disability severity and socio-economic outcomes in polio survivors.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study of 102 consecutive patients hospitalized for poliomyelitis.
  • Data collection on educational history, employment status, and disability pension.
  • Comparison of outcomes with the general Norwegian population.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A significant proportion of polio patients pursued higher education and worked full-time.
  • Employment rates were comparable to age-matched controls in Norway.
  • Paraparesis did not preclude full-time employment for most affected individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Polio survivors exhibit robust educational and professional engagement.
  • Socio-economic success is not solely determined by the degree of physical impairment post-polio.
  • Polio patients are generally well-integrated and self-sufficient within society.
