Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Comparative Oncology

Background:

  • Hepatoblastoma is a rare primary liver cancer originating from hepatic stem cells.
  • Canine liver tumors are diverse, but hepatoblastoma is exceptionally uncommon, necessitating detailed case studies.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old female Maltese dog presented with hepatoblastoma.
  • Histological analysis revealed a wide trabecular pattern with vascular lakes.
  • Tumor cells showed positive cytokeratin and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) staining, but negative chromogranin.

Findings:

  • Electron microscopy demonstrated tumor cells with continuous basement membranes and poorly developed desmosomes.
  • Sinusoidal endothelial cells exhibited fenestrations and were associated with myofibroblast-like cells.
  • The unique morphological characteristics provide a basis for classifying canine hepatoblastoma.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case represents the first detailed morphological study of canine hepatoblastoma.
  • Understanding these features aids in accurate diagnosis and differential diagnosis of canine liver tumors.
  • Contributes valuable data to comparative oncology and veterinary pathology research.
