Rett syndrome (RS) is linked to reduced blood flow in the brain's frontal lobes and midbrain, particularly evident by age three to four. These areas are crucial for RS pathophysiology.

Background:

  • Rett syndrome (RS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder.
  • Previous studies suggest morphological and functional abnormalities in specific brain regions in RS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in individuals with Rett syndrome.
  • To compare rCBF in RS patients with neurologically healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured.
  • A cohort of 16 girls and one 24-year-old woman with Rett syndrome was compared to 16 healthy children.

Main Results:

  • Hypoperfusion (reduced blood flow) was observed in the frontal lobes and parts of the midbrain of RS patients.
