Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) offers a shorter hospital stay and less pain compared to open appendectomy (OA). This study found LA to be a safe, cost-effective, and viable alternative for acute appendicitis treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Innovation
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Comparative Effectiveness Research

Background:

  • Acute appendicitis remains a common surgical emergency.
  • Open appendectomy (OA) is the traditional surgical approach.
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) presents a minimally invasive alternative requiring comparative analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical outcomes and postoperative complications of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) versus open appendectomy (OA).
  • To evaluate the safety, cost-effectiveness, and patient recovery associated with both surgical techniques for acute appendicitis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of patients undergoing either LA or OA for acute appendicitis.
  • Comparison of key metrics including hospital stay, pain management, operative time, complication rates, and total cost.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical analysis to determine significant differences between the LA and OA groups.
  • Main Results:

    • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) demonstrated a significantly shorter mean hospital stay (32.5 vs. 74.2 hours) and reduced parenteral analgesia requirement (2.6 vs. 4.7) compared to open appendectomy (OA).
    • Total cost was significantly lower for LA ($7,090 vs. $11,260).
    • No significant differences were observed in operative time, procedure duration, surgery costs, or postoperative complication rates between the two groups. Conversion rate for LA was 1.3%.

    Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is a safe, effective, and viable alternative to open appendectomy (OA) for managing acute appendicitis.
    • LA offers advantages of reduced patient pain and shorter hospital stays, contributing to its cost-effectiveness.
    • The findings support the adoption of LA as a preferred surgical approach in select cases of acute appendicitis.
