This study describes two cases of spindle-cell tumors associated with hypoglycemia. Ultrastructural similarities were noted between these tumors and pancreatic beta cells.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Extrapancreatic tumors can present with hypoglycemia.
    • The origin of these tumors is often unclear.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with extrapancreatic tumors experienced hypoglycemic episodes.
    • Microscopic and electron microscopy analysis was performed.
    • Tumor locations included intracranial with liver metastasis and intrathoracic recurrence.

    Findings:

    • The tumors were classified as spindle-cell tumors associated with hypoglycemia.
    • Intracranial origin and ultrastructural features did not support a mesothelial origin.
    • Similarities were observed between these neoplasms and pancreatic beta cells.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • These findings aid in the classification and understanding of rare tumors causing hypoglycemia.
    • Further research into the cellular origins and mechanisms of these tumors is warranted.
