Volume reduction surgery in the treatment of end-stage heart diseases
1Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Buffalo General Hospital, New York, USA.
Abstract:
Originated in South America, the Batista operation offers a new option in the treatment of patients with end-stage heart diseases. The procedure, in its infancy, appears to be beneficial to patients with severe dilated cardiomyopathy. Indications for surgery are evolving, and long-term results are not available presently. Surgeons interested in this procedure should gain experience from other centers performing the surgery. We recommend that institutional review board approval and informed consent be obtained from patients who are to undergo this procedure.
