Maternal and child health from the perspective of Army social workers
1Tripler Army Medical Center, Social Work Service, HI 96859-5000, USA.
This article presents the results of a mail survey sent to chiefs of social work services at Army medical treatment facilities with inpatient capabilities. This exploratory and descriptive study was undertaken to understand how social workers at Army medical treatment facilities with inpatient capabilities perceive the structure and delivery of maternal and child health services and the needs of new and expectant parents. Of the 26 medical treatment facilities with inpatient capabilities, 8 reported deliveries only at civilian or other military hospitals. Respondents reported a variety of services and supports available to new and expectant parents. It is suggested that there is a need for better linkage with families that deliver at other hospitals.
