Medication, logic, and schizophernic thinking: a reply to Marini

D Y Ho

    The Journal of Genetic Psychology
    |September 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Medication does not fundamentally alter schizophrenic thought disorder. This finding supports that the thinking pathology in schizophrenia is not solely due to defective deductive reasoning, even in medicated patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Cognitive Psychology
    • Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Schizophrenic thought disorder is a complex phenomenon.
    • The role of medication in influencing thought processes in schizophrenia is debated.
    • Marini critiqued previous research on deductive reasoning in schizophrenia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To address Marini's critique regarding medication's influence on schizophrenic thought.
    • To clarify the impact of medication on the study of logic in schizophrenic thought production.
    • To re-evaluate the conclusion that schizophrenic thinking pathology stems from a defect in deductive reasoning.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of clinical observations on the effects of medication on schizophrenic thought.
    • Analysis of the relationship between medication status and the form/content of thought disorder.
    • Re-examination of the original research's findings in light of medication use.

    Main Results:

    • Clinical observations suggest medication does not fundamentally change the form or content of schizophrenic thought disorder.
    • The thinking pathology observed in schizophrenics is not explained by a basic defect in deductive reasoning, irrespective of medication.

    Conclusions:

    • The use of medication in the original study does not invalidate the conclusions drawn about schizophrenic thought pathology.
    • Schizophrenic thought disorder's underlying mechanisms are not fully explained by deductive reasoning deficits alone.
    • Further research is needed to understand the multifaceted nature of thought disorder in schizophrenia.
