    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • A 24-year-old male with a history of gastric ulcer presented with epigastralgia and weight loss.
    • Initial upper G.I. endoscopy revealed multiple ulcers with atypical lymphoid cell proliferation.

    Observation:

    • A subsequent endoscopy identified superficial gastric lymphoma, diagnosed as MALT lymphoma associated with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
    • Initial H. pylori eradication therapy (lansoprazole, teprenone, amoxicillin) showed transient progression of ulcerative lesions.

    Findings:

    • Despite initial progression, a follow-up endoscopy one month later demonstrated significant macroscopic and histological regression.
    • Complete disappearance of gastric MALT lymphoma was confirmed by endoscopy and histology by April 1996, with no observed recurrence.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests that MALT lymphoma associated with H. pylori may undergo complete regression after initial H. pylori eradication therapy, even with transient progression.
    • It underscores the importance of continued monitoring and potential delayed response to treatment in gastric MALT lymphoma.
