Summary

Venlafaxine therapy can cause hyponatremia, a condition of low sodium levels. This case highlights the importance of considering venlafaxine-induced syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) in patients with hyponatremia.

Protein science : a publication of the Protein Society·1999

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Endocrinology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed for depression.
  • Hyponatremia is a potential adverse effect associated with some antidepressant medications.

Observation:

  • A 92-year-old woman developed hyponatremia during venlafaxine treatment for depression.
  • Diagnostic workup confirmed Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH).

Findings:

  • A temporal link between venlafaxine initiation and hyponatremia onset was established.
  • Discontinuation of venlafaxine led to the resolution of hyponatremia.

Implications:

  • Venlafaxine, a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor, may cause hyponatremia similar to SSRIs.
  • Clinicians should consider venlafaxine-induced SIADH in the differential diagnosis of hyponatremia.
