Area of Science:

  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Procedures

Context:

  • Anal fissures and associated internal anal sphincter hypertrophy/spasms require effective treatment.
  • Traditional surgical techniques may involve more complex procedures.
  • Outpatient surgical options offer potential benefits in terms of cost and patient convenience.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and practicality of internal subcutaneous sphincterotomy under local anesthesia.
  • To compare this outpatient procedure with alternative surgical methods for internal anal sphincter dysfunction.
  • To report outcomes from a series of 253 internal subcutaneous sphincterotomy operations.

Summary:

  • Internal subcutaneous sphincterotomy was performed on 253 patients between 1989 and 1995.
