Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Endoscopic Therapy

Background:

  • Peptic ulcer bleeding is a common gastrointestinal emergency.
  • Injection therapy with sclerosants and adrenaline is a recognized hemostatic method.
  • Limited data exists on injection therapy for bleeding peptic ulcers in India.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of absolute alcohol injection therapy for bleeding peptic ulcers in an Indian population.
  • To compare outcomes between gastric and duodenal ulcers treated with injection therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 76 patients with bleeding peptic ulcers.
  • Injection therapy using absolute alcohol was administered endoscopically.
  • Patients were monitored for hemostasis, recurrence, and complications.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Successful hemostasis was achieved in all 76 patients (100%).
  • Bleeding recurrence occurred in two patients, managed with a second injection.
  • Gastric ulcer patients required significantly more blood transfusions (76%) than duodenal ulcer patients (22%) (P < 0.001).
  • No complications related to the injection therapy were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Injection therapy with absolute alcohol is a safe and highly effective treatment for bleeding peptic ulcers.
  • The procedure demonstrates significant success in the Indian patient cohort.
  • Absolute alcohol injection presents a viable endoscopic option for managing peptic ulcer hemorrhage.
