Abstract:
Forty mothers with two or more children between 2-14 years in age were the subjects of this study. The number of CFU/ml of S. mutans in saliva of mothers and their children and their relationship to dental caries was assessed. The degree of infection seemed to reflect the caries experience of the mother with that of her children. A quantitative correlation was observed between the number of CFU/ml of S. mutans in the mother and their second child only. A significant correlation was also noted between the colony forming units per ml of Streptococcus mutans and DMFT scores of the children.
