Urolithiasis. A study of its frequency

A Norlin, B Lindell, P O Granberg

Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology
    |January 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

The incidence of kidney and ureteral stones (urolithiasis) significantly increased in a Swedish urban population between the 1950s and 1970s. This study observed a 50% rise in acute urolithiasis cases during this period.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Epidemiology
    • Nephrology

    Background:

    • Acute renal colic is a common condition.
    • Previous observations suggested an increase in urolithiasis cases.
    • Understanding trends in urolithiasis is crucial for public health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the changing incidence of kidney and ureteral calculi.
    • To compare urolithiasis rates between two distinct time periods (1953-55 and 1968-70).
    • To analyze sex-specific incidence trends.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of outpatient data.
    • Roentgenological verification of ureteral and kidney calculi.
    • Comparison of incidence rates over two 3-year periods in a Swedish urban district.

    Main Results:

    • A significant increase in upper urinary tract calculi incidence was observed in both men (2.2 to 3.3 0/00) and women (0.5 to 0.8 0/00).
    • The overall incidence of acute urolithiasis rose by 50% (from 1.3 to 2.0 0/00).
    • Statistical significance was confirmed for the observed increases (p < 0.001 for men and overall; p < 0.05 for women).

    Conclusions:

    • Urolithiasis incidence significantly increased in the studied Swedish urban population between the two periods.
    • The findings warrant further investigation into contributing factors, including potential links to primary hyperparathyroidism.
    • Public health strategies may need to adapt to the rising trend of kidney stone disease.
