Huston's and Joyce's "The dead"

Although much is amplified by John Huston's bold translation of James Joyce's story "The Dead" into film, and much is gained, important depths and subtleties of characterization are lost. A psychoanalytic perspective can help to specify what the story accomplishes that the film cannot.
