Complications of chronic cyclitis

R E Smith, W A Godfrey, S J Kimura

    American Journal of Ophthalmology
    |August 1, 1976

    Summary

Chronic cyclitis can lead to significant vision loss, primarily due to macular edema and subsequent degenerative changes. Early active stages may show temporary visual impairment from vitreous opacities.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Retinal Diseases
    • Uveitis

    Background:

    • Chronic cyclitis is an inflammatory eye condition with potential long-term complications.
    • Understanding the visual outcomes and risk factors is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term visual prognosis and complications in patients with chronic cyclitis.
    • To identify factors contributing to decreased visual acuity in chronic cyclitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Follow-up examinations of 100 patients with chronic cyclitis over 4 to 20+ years.
    • Assessment of visual acuity and identification of ocular complications.
    • Analysis of the impact of disease stage (active vs. inactive) on visual outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Cataracts (42%) and macular disease secondary to edema (28%) were common complications.
    • Permanent macular changes occurred in 74% of eyes with final visual acuity ≤ 6/12 (20/40), often from prior cystoid macular edema.
    • Vitreous opacities impacted early vision but were not major factors in late-stage visual prognosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Macular edema and subsequent degenerative changes are the primary causes of irreversible vision loss in chronic cyclitis.
    • While early vitreous changes can affect vision, late-stage macular complications are more significant for long-term visual prognosis.
    • The role of corticosteroids in cataract and glaucoma development requires further investigation.
