[Disseminated carcinoma of the prostate: monotherapy or complete androgenic blockade?]

Objectives:
To review the different modalities of hormonal therapy in the treatment of prostatic cancer and to analyze the results achieved by monotherapy and total androgen blockade.
Methods:
The results of different studies published in the literature are reviewed, with special reference to the results of the more important randomized studies.
Results/Conclusions:
Hormone suppression achieves a response rate of more than 75% and is therefore a valid alternative in the management of metastatic cancer of the prostate. Monotherapy and total androgen blockade have similar survival rates and disease free intervals. However, the results according to prognostic groups are significantly better for those treated with total androgen blockade and has less severe disease, suggesting early treatment.
