Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Urology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Phenothiazines are a class of drugs with various therapeutic uses.
  • Priapism is a medical emergency characterized by persistent penile erection.

Observation:

  • A patient developed priapism following oral administration of prothipendylhydrochloride.
  • This adverse drug event was noted in the clinical setting.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of priapism associated with prothipendylhydrochloride.
  • The phenothiazine derivative prothipendylhydrochloride is implicated as a potential cause of priapism.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of priapism as a potential side effect of prothipendylhydrochloride.
  • Further investigation into the mechanisms linking phenothiazines to priapism may be warranted.
