    Gambian trypanosomiasis patients show low complement levels (C3, C4, factor B), which normalize after melarsoprol treatment. High IgM correlates with low C3, suggesting IgM complexes contribute to complement deficiency in sleeping sickness.

    Background:

    • Gambian trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is a parasitic disease affecting the central nervous system.
    • The complement system is a crucial part of the immune system, involved in pathogen clearance and inflammation.
    • Dysregulation of the complement system has been implicated in various infectious diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate complement component levels (C3, C4, factor B) in patients with Gambian trypanosomiasis.
    • To explore the relationship between complement levels, disease stage, and treatment response.
    • To elucidate the role of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and cryoglobulins in complement alterations.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples from patients with early and advanced Gambian trypanosomiasis were analyzed.
