Summary

Anthracofibrosis, characterized by bronchial narrowing and black pigmentation, is strongly linked to tuberculosis. Early detection of active tuberculosis is crucial in patients with this finding to prevent disease spread.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Bronchial narrowing and black pigmentation, termed anthracofibrosis, present unique clinical challenges.
  • The association between anthracofibrosis and tuberculosis requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define the clinical characteristics of patients with anthracofibrosis.
  • To determine the association between anthracofibrosis and tuberculosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 28 patients (8 men, 20 women; ages 42-86) with anthracofibrosis.
  • Evaluation of clinical features, bronchoscopic and radiologic findings, and bacteriologic/pathologic results.

Main Results:

  • Cough and dyspnea were primary symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Bronchial narrowing, often in the right middle lobe, was common.
  • Active tuberculosis was confirmed in 17 patients, with fibrotic lesions containing black pigments.
  • Conclusions:

    • Anthracofibrosis is likely a fibrotic response to tuberculosis (active or old).
    • Screening for active tuberculosis is recommended in patients with anthracofibrosis to guide management and prevent transmission.
