Summary

Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) contains superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD 1) activity, primarily from SOD 1. Smokers exhibited lower SOD activity in BALF compared to controls and asthmatics.

  • To detect and identify superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities in BALF.
  • To quantify SOD enzyme presence in BALF from different subject groups.

  • BALF samples from non-smokers, smokers, and asthmatics were analyzed for SOD activity.
  • A modified pyrogallol auto-oxidation method was employed.
  • Enzyme identification utilized activity inhibition and gel filtration chromatography.
