Area of Science:

  • Clinical Toxicology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Digitalis (cardiac glycoside) toxicity is a frequent clinical challenge.
  • Severe digitoxin poisoning can lead to life-threatening conditions.

Observation:

  • Three cases of severe digitoxin poisoning with high S-digitoxin levels (115, 150, 239 nmol/l) were documented.
  • All patients presented with severe poisoning symptoms.

Findings:

  • Intravenous administration of digoxin-specific Fab antibody fragments was used as an antidote.
  • All three patients experienced favorable outcomes following treatment with the antibody fragments.

Implications:

  • The successful treatment of severe digitoxin poisoning with digoxin-specific antibodies suggests their efficacy.
