Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Minimally invasive vascular interventions require precise instrument navigation.
  • Current methods often lack real-time, non-ionizing visualization of guidewires and catheters.
  • Magnetic Resonance (MR) offers potential for real-time guidance without ionizing radiation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate an MR-trackable vascular guidewire.
  • To assess the feasibility of simultaneous MR tracking of a guidewire and catheter in vivo.
  • To advance the potential for MR-guided vascular interventions.

Main Methods:

  • A vascular guidewire was modified with an integrated miniature radiofrequency (RF) receive coil at its tip.
  • In vitro testing validated the guidewire's MR tracking capabilities.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Simultaneous MR tracking of the guidewire and a catheter was performed in the aortic and abdominal vasculature of a swine model at 1.5 Tesla.
  • Main Results:

    • Successful active MR tracking of a .035-inch guidewire was achieved.
    • The system demonstrated the ability to simultaneously track both a guidewire and a catheter in vivo.
    • Feasibility of tracking small, clinically relevant interventional devices was confirmed.

    Conclusions:

    • Active MR tracking of miniature vascular guidewires is feasible.
    • Simultaneous multi-device tracking under MR guidance is achievable.
    • This technology represents a significant advancement for MR-guided vascular interventions.
