Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Adolescent Health
  • Exercise Psychology

Background:

  • The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) is widely used to understand behavior change.
  • Its applicability to adolescent exercise behavior requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the Transtheoretical Model's applicability to adolescent exercise behavior.
  • To examine stages of change, processes of change, self-efficacy, and decisional balance in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 819 high school students (Grades 9-12) completed adapted questionnaires.
  • The stage of exercise behavior change was the primary dependent variable.

Main Results:

  • The majority of adolescents were in the preparation (28.7%) and maintenance (49.3%) stages.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Significant differences in TTM constructs were observed across stages of change (p < 0.0038).
  • The intersection of pros and cons for exercise behavior occurred in different stages depending on score analysis (t-scores vs. raw scores).
  • Conclusions:

    • Preliminary evidence supports the Transtheoretical Model's utility for understanding adolescent exercise.
    • Low representation in precontemplation and contemplation stages was noted but not considered a limitation for this study's aims.
