Antihypertensive therapy and cardiovascular disease. Impact of effective therapy on disease progression
1Department of Preventive Medicine, Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, IL 60612-3824, USA.
Insights
Antihypertensive therapy significantly reduces cardiovascular disease risks like stroke and heart failure. Treatment benefits are evident across all age groups, including the elderly, improving health outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Hypertension is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the US.
- Antihypertensive therapy is proven to prevent CVD-related morbidity and mortality.
- The aging population necessitates effective treatments for hypertension in the elderly.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the impact of antihypertensive treatment on cardiovascular disease.
- To examine the effects of antihypertensive therapy on key treatment endpoints.
Main Methods:
- Review of clinical trial results.
- Analysis of data on stroke, coronary heart disease, and heart failure outcomes.
- Evaluation of treatment efficacy in elderly populations.
Main Results:
- Clinical trials confirm the benefits of antihypertensive therapy.
- Treatment effectively prevents major cardiovascular events.
- Therapy demonstrates significant efficacy in older adults.
Conclusions:
- Antihypertensive treatment is crucial for managing cardiovascular disease.
- The benefits extend to preventing stroke, coronary heart disease, and heart failure.
- Effective treatment strategies are vital, especially for the growing elderly demographic.
Abstract:
Hypertension is the most ubiquitous risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. Results from clinical trials have established the benefit of antihypertensive therapy in preventing the morbidity and mortality associated with high blood pressure, including stroke, coronary heart disease, and heart failure. Treatment is effective in the elderly, a significant consideration because the percentage of the elderly population is growing rapidly. This article reviews the impact of antihypertensive treatment on cardiovascular disease and treatment endpoints.
