Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of light-cycle exposure and specific hormones/drugs in regulating amphibian metamorphosis.
  • To test the hypothesis that melatonin and elevated prolactin (Prl) delay metamorphosis.

Main Methods:

  • Xenopus laevis tadpoles were exposed to light/dark (LD), DD, or continuous light (LL) conditions.
  • Subgroups received thyroxine (T4), melatonin, bromocriptine (Bro), or haloperidol (Hal) treatments.
  • Metamorphosis progression, body size, and developmental stages were monitored.

Main Results:

  • DD delayed metamorphosis, while LL did not; T4 accelerated metamorphosis, counteracting DD effects.
