Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Primary obstructive megaureter is a rare condition, particularly in adults.
  • Giant hydronephrosis, a severe dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces, is also uncommon in adults.

Observation:

  • This case presents a unique instance of giant hydronephrosis in an adult.
  • The condition led to obstructive jaundice, a complication not previously reported in literature for primary obstructive megaureter.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent initial treatment with percutaneous nephrostomy to manage the jaundice.
  • Definitive treatment involved ureteral tailoring, reimplantation, nephroplication, and nephropexy, resulting in a successful outcome.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for primary obstructive megaureter to cause severe complications like obstructive jaundice in adults.

Related Experiment Videos

  • It underscores the importance of considering megaureter in the differential diagnosis of adult hydronephrosis and jaundice.
  • The successful surgical management demonstrates an effective approach to this rare clinical scenario.
