Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Bacteriology

Background:

  • Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative bacterium primarily known for causing meningitis.
  • Infections with Neisseria meningitidis outside of the central nervous system are uncommon.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a patient presenting with both cellulitis and sialadenitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis was observed.
  • This presentation is unique as no prior instances of meningococcal sialadenitis have been documented in medical literature.

Findings:

  • The patient with co-occurring meningococcal cellulitis and sialadenitis received successful treatment.
  • A review of existing literature on Neisseria meningitidis cellulitis was conducted to contextualize this case.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of Neisseria meningitidis infections.
  • Further research may elucidate the role of underlying conditions in the pathogenesis of invasive meningococcal disease presenting as cellulitis and sialadenitis.
