Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Automotive Engineering

Background:

  • Motor vehicle accidents are a significant cause of traumatic injuries.
  • Ocular trauma can lead to severe vision impairment or blindness.

Observation:

  • Three cases of perforating eye injuries resulted from shattered external rear vision mirrors.
  • These injuries occurred during motor vehicle accidents.

Findings:

  • External rear vision mirrors pose a risk for causing serious ocular injuries.
  • The incidence of such injuries requires further investigation.

Implications:

  • Current vehicle manufacturing methods and design rules may need revision.
  • Enhanced safety standards for automotive mirrors could prevent future eye injuries.
