    Summary

    Acrodermatitis enteropathica treatment improved intestinal mucosa abnormalities. Oral zinc therapy effectively restored normal cellular and villous patterns, unlike di-iodohydroxyquinoline.

    Background:

    • Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a rare genetic disorder of zinc malabsorption.
    • Intestinal mucosal abnormalities are observed in patients with AE.

    Observation:

    • Duodenal biopsies in three AE cases revealed intestinal mucosa abnormalities at the start of treatment.
    • Biopsies during treatment showed progressive mucosal improvement.

    Findings:

    • Oral zinc sulfate therapy led to complete restoration of normal intestinal cellular and villous patterns.
    • Di-iodohydroxyquinoline therapy showed less efficacy in normalizing intestinal epithelial cells and lamina propria inflammation compared to zinc.

    Implications:

    • This study highlights the critical role of zinc in maintaining intestinal mucosal integrity in AE.
    • Effective zinc supplementation can reverse intestinal pathology in acrodermatitis enteropathica.
    • Findings support zinc as a primary therapeutic agent for AE-related gastrointestinal manifestations.
