[Betacap efficiency in elderly patients with coronary heart disease and essential hypertension]
Insights
Long-acting propranolol (Betacap) effectively treats elderly patients with essential hypertension and coronary disease, improving exercise tolerance and reducing angina. It is most effective when taken in the morning.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
Context:
- Essential hypertension (EH) and coronary disease (CD) are prevalent in elderly populations.
- Managing comorbid EH and CD in older adults presents therapeutic challenges.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy of long-acting propranolol (Betacap) in elderly patients with both EH and CD.
- To determine optimal dosing and timing for Betacap administration.
Summary:
- A study involving 16 elderly patients (mean age 60) with EH and CD assessed Betacap's effects using various cardiovascular monitoring techniques.
- Betacap demonstrated significant antianginal and hypotensive effects, reducing myocardial energy expenditure and enhancing exercise tolerance.
- The medication was found to be more effective when administered at 10:00 AM, particularly in patients with hyperkinetic circulation.
Impact:
- Long-acting propranolol (Betacap) is a recommended therapeutic option for elderly patients suffering from essential hypertension and coronary disease.
- The findings support the use of Betacap for improving cardiovascular outcomes and quality of life in this patient demographic.
Aim:
To assess the efficacy of long-acting propranolol in elderly patients with essential hypertension (EH) and coronary disease (CD).
Materials And Methods:
Sixteen patients (mean age 60 years) with EH and CD were examined using ECG and echoCG, chest rheoplethysmography, Holter ECG monitoring, and exercise test. Betacap was administered once a day in doses 40 or 80 mg at 10.00 or 13.00.
Results:
The drug exerted an antianginal and hypotensive effect. Energy expenditures of the myocardium decreased and exercise tolerance improved; the drug was more effective in patients with the hyperkinetic circulation and if taken at 10.00.
Conclusion:
Betacap is an effective antianginal and hypotensive agent, recommended for therapy of elderly patients with EH and CD.
