Summary

Anemia in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) can hinder ventilator weaning. Tailoring blood transfusions to individual needs, rather than a fixed threshold, can improve weaning success rates in these patients.

Background:

  • Anemia is a common comorbidity in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD).
  • Ventilator weaning can be challenging in COPD patients, and anemia may contribute to difficulties.

Observation:

  • A case series of five anemic COPD patients experienced unsuccessful ventilator weaning trials.
  • These patients had a mean hemoglobin level of 8.7 g/dL.
  • Following transfer to a specialized weaning center, blood transfusion was administered to raise hemoglobin levels to 12 g/dL or higher.

Findings:

  • All five patients were successfully weaned from the ventilator after blood transfusion.
  • This suggests a potential benefit of transfusion in improving weaning outcomes.
