Summary

Topical dorzolamide hydrochloride, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, improved visual function in normal subjects. It enhanced contrast sensitivity during hypercapnia and hypocapnia, and increased light sensitivity under normal breathing.

  • To investigate the effect of topical dorzolamide hydrochloride on visual function.

  • A randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled crossover study.
  • 12 healthy subjects received dorzolamide 2% or placebo three times daily for 4 days, followed by a 2-week washout.
  • Contrast sensitivity and visual field perimetry were measured under different breathing conditions.
