Summary

Hyposalivation, or dry mouth, is a common side effect of many medications, especially in the elderly and psychiatric patients. This review examines drug-induced dry mouth and identifies high-risk medication combinations.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Oral Medicine
  • Geriatric Medicine

Context:

  • Hyposalivation, characterized by reduced salivary flow, can lead to xerostomia (dry mouth).
  • This condition significantly impacts oral health, causing pain, denture intolerance, taste alteration, and increased susceptibility to infections like candidiasis and caries.
  • It is a prevalent issue, particularly among the elderly and psychiatric patients on long-term medications, yet often overlooked clinically.

Purpose:

  • To review medications known to induce xerostomia based on the 1997 French pharmacopeia.
  • To identify and discuss high-risk drug associations that exacerbate hyposalivation.

Summary:

  • Hyposalivation is a frequent, often reversible, drug-induced side effect, with xerostomia as its most severe form.
  • Numerous drug classes, including antimuscarinics, antihistamines, antidepressants, and neuroleptics, are implicated.
  • The review focuses on drug-induced xerostomia and associated risks within the context of the 1997 French pharmacopeia.

Impact:

  • Highlights the significant oral health consequences of hyposalivation.
  • Emphasizes the need for clinical awareness regarding drug-induced dry mouth, especially in vulnerable populations.
  • Provides valuable information for healthcare professionals on managing medication side effects and preventing oral complications.
