Background:

Elevated abortion rates in a low socioeconomic area of Göteborg, Sweden, prompted a focused investigation.
The study addressed the need for improved reproductive health services in underserved populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To enhance access to immediate and ongoing family planning counseling for women with negative pregnancy tests who do not desire pregnancy.
To investigate reasons for inadequate or inconsistent contraceptive use.
To reduce unintended pregnancy rates and their impact on abortion statistics.

Main Methods:

Midwives provided immediate and extended family planning advice to 463 women of reproductive age with negative pregnancy tests and no desire for pregnancy.

Data were collected over a six-month period in 1988-1989 in an area with 5,200 women.

Reasons for non-contraceptive use were explored.

A significant proportion of women (310 out of 463) counseled were not using contraceptives at the time of the study.
