Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cognitive function in elderly individuals with persistent impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).
  • To explore potential metabolic factors, such as insulin levels, associated with cognitive performance in this group.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based sample of 1,300 individuals was assessed for glucose and insulin levels.
  • 980 subjects were re-evaluated after an average of 3.5 years, with cognitive function assessed using a neuropsychological test battery.

    • Hyperinsulinemia is a potential mechanism underlying the link between persistent IGT and cognitive decline in older adults.
