Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Health Economics
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) poses a significant public health challenge.
  • Effective screening strategies are crucial for early detection and improved patient outcomes.
  • Previous cost-effectiveness analyses of CRC screening have yielded varied results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the cost-effectiveness of various colorectal cancer screening programs.
  • To compare programs with different screening intervals and target populations.
  • To identify the most efficient screening strategies for CRC in a defined population.

Main Methods:

  • Simulation modeling based on data from a randomized trial in Funen County, Denmark (initiated 1985).
  • Evaluation of 60 distinct CRC screening program scenarios.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Application of the unhydrated Hemoccult-II as the primary screening test.
  • Main Results:

    • Six mutually exclusive screening programs demonstrated cost-effectiveness.
    • Estimated cost-effectiveness ranged from 17,000 to 42,500 Danish kroner (DKK) per life-year gained.
    • The optimal program depended on specific screening intervals and target demographics.

    Conclusions:

    • Cost-effective colorectal cancer screening is achievable with optimized program design.
    • The Hemoccult-II test can be part of efficient CRC screening strategies.
    • Program efficiency is influenced by choices in screening frequency and population selection.
