Summary

Prone positioning improves oxygenation in Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) patients. This simple, effective method enhances ventilation-perfusion matching and may reduce mortality in severe respiratory failure.

Background:

  • Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a severe condition characterized by impaired gas exchange.
  • The prone position has been anecdotally reported to improve oxygenation in ARDS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the prone position in improving oxygenation in patients with severe Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).
  • To assess the impact of prone positioning on mortality in ARDS patients.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical study involving 14 ARDS patients with severe respiratory failure treated in the prone position.
  • Patients were monitored for oxygenation (PaO2/FiO2 ratio) after 1 hour, with responders treated for at least 6 hours.
