Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is a common parasitic infection, typically caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
  • Clinical presentation of ALA can vary, but obstructive jaundice is an uncommon manifestation.

Observation:

  • A middle-aged male presented with bilateral hepatic abscesses causing obstructive jaundice due to porta hepatis compression.
  • Initial needle aspirations were ineffective, necessitating open surgical drainage.

Findings:

  • Post-drainage, the patient developed a biliary leak, confirmed by contrast imaging showing a biliary-abscess cavity communication.
  • The biliary leak and abscess cavities resolved spontaneously during follow-up.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the diverse clinical spectrum of amebic liver abscesses.
  • It underscores the importance of considering biliary communication in complex ALA cases and the potential for spontaneous resolution.
