Summary

Hydrogen peroxide bleaching of root-filled teeth can cause root resorption by generating hydroxyl radicals. These radicals, particularly when teeth are discolored by blood, degrade connective tissue, potentially leading to resorption.

Background:

  • Intra-coronal bleaching of root-filled teeth is linked to invasive cervical root resorption.
  • Hydrogen peroxide diffusion into the periodontium is hypothesized to cause tissue destruction and resorption.
  • Hydrogen peroxide can generate reactive hydroxyl radicals, which degrade connective tissue components like collagen.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate hydroxyl radical generation during the intra-coronal bleaching of blood-discolored, root-filled human teeth.
  • To explore the role of blood components and cleaning agents in this process.

Main Methods:

  • Forty extracted human premolars were root-filled and twenty were discolored with blood.
  • Teeth underwent thermo-catalytic bleaching with 30% hydrogen peroxide in sodium salicylate solution.
