Summary

Lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis infantilis (LCAI) presents with a central depression and surrounding erythema. The erythema is transient and not essential for the progression of the lipodystrophy.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pediatric Endocrinology

Background:

  • Lipodystrophia centrifugalis abdominalis infantilis (LCAI) is a rare lipodystrophy primarily affecting Asian populations.
  • The condition typically starts as an erythematous macule that expands centrifugally, leading to a central depression.

Observation:

  • A case of LCAI in a 2-year-old Japanese girl is presented, detailing early-stage clinical features.
  • Initial presentation included a subtle depression with faint, morphea-like erythema, which resolved within five months.
  • Subsequent lipodystrophy progression occurred in new areas, independent of treatment.

Findings:

  • The study highlights the transient nature of the erythema in LCAI.
  • The central depression is the persistent feature, continuing to enlarge even after erythema resolution.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that the initial erythema is a preceding but not a driving factor in LCAI progression.
  • Understanding the distinct phases of LCAI, particularly the role of erythema, can aid in diagnosis and management.
