Summary

A rare cerebriform sebaceous nevus, a benign skin growth, was identified in a young man. Histopathology confirmed mature sebaceous and apocrine glands, with a malformed hair germ, indicating a congenital skin condition.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology
  • Medical Genetics

Background:

  • Sebaceous nevi are congenital hamartomas typically presenting at birth or early infancy.
  • While generally benign, they have a potential for malignant transformation, necessitating accurate diagnosis.
  • Cerebriform sebaceous nevi are a rare variant characterized by a distinctive folded appearance.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old male presented with a large (9.5 cm), pinkish-yellow, cerebriform plaque on the right parieto-occipital region.
  • The lesion exhibited nine distinct folds with short black terminal hair in the sulci and lacked follicular plugging.
  • Neurologic, ophthalmologic, and skeletal assessments were unremarkable.

Findings:

  • Skin biopsy revealed a sebaceous nevus with mature sebaceous glands in the upper dermis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Mature apocrine glands were identified in the lower dermis.
  • A malformed hair germ was noted within the lesion's structure.
  • Implications:

    • Accurate histopathological diagnosis is crucial for differentiating sebaceous nevi from other scalp lesions.
    • The benign nature of this specific presentation suggests a favorable prognosis, though monitoring for potential changes is advised.
    • Understanding the histogenesis of malformed adnexal structures in congenital nevi aids in classifying these lesions.
