Summary

A rare case of a calcified osteo-producing fibroma, a benign retroperitoneal tumor, was diagnosed in a 31-year-old male. This slow-growing tumor, originating from the adrenal gland, presented with heavy calcifications, an unusual characteristic for fibromas.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal tumors are rare, with benign neoplasms accounting for approximately 25% of all cases.
  • Adrenal gland tumors can present as retroperitoneal masses, requiring accurate diagnostic imaging and histological evaluation.

Observation:

  • A 31-year-old male presented with a left para-aortic calcific mass identified via abdominal ultrasound.
  • CT scan revealed the mass originated from the left adrenal gland.
  • Surgical excision of the large, retroperitoneal mass, which was adherent but not infiltrating the left kidney and spleen, was performed.

Findings:

  • Histological examination diagnosed the tumor as a calcified osteo-producing fibroma.
  • The tumor exhibited heavy calcifications, an atypical feature for fibroma-type masses.
  • The patient's tumor demonstrated slow growth and a benign clinical course.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights an unusual presentation of a benign retroperitoneal tumor with significant calcification.
  • Accurate diagnosis of retroperitoneal masses requires a combination of imaging and histopathology.
  • Understanding rare tumor variations is crucial for effective clinical management and treatment strategies.
