Treatment for heart failure improves left atrial (LA) function by reducing left ventricular (LV) stiffness. This improves atrial filling velocity, suggesting LA dysfunction is often due to afterload mismatch, not intrinsic disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate left atrial (LA) function during reduced left ventricular (LV) filling pressure after heart failure treatment.
  • To explore the relationship between LA function, LV stiffness, and atrial filling dynamics.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve patients with LV dysfunction underwent right heart catheterization and echocardiography before and after heart failure treatment.
  • Measurements included LV/LA volumes, ejection fractions, mitral/pulmonary venous flow velocities, and LV stiffness (LV filling pressure/LV end-diastolic volume).
